Would you provide a brief introduction to your academic profile?
Answer:
My name is Alexandru Lupan. My research interest is molecular modelling, i.e. electronic structure calculations whose wide applicability can provide valuable answers in various branches of chemistry. My experience is centered on the molecular modeling of cluster compounds (especially boranes, metallaboranes and germanium clusters), calixarenes, interaction of proteins with metals and metal-containing compounds such as cisplatin, enzyme active sites (laccase, sulfite reductase, superoxide reductase), biopolymers (polypeptides, polylactic acid) and metal complexes with biological activity.

A brief presentation of the academic achievement?
Answer:
Over the past six years my research activity has been focused mainly on electronic structure calculations of inorganic cluster systems (from boranes to metal clusters), as funded by UBB via a GTC grant and by UEFISCDI via a young researchers team grant followed by a PCE project. The results obtained over the past six years have been published in numerous top journals of the field (almost 50 articles in Q1 and Q2 journals according to their impact, out of which almost one third in the most respected traditional journals of the field – Dalton Transactions and Inorganic Chemistry) and this year an article has been published in Coordination Chemistry Reviews (I.F. 13.32) which is the no. 1 journal in inorganic chemistry.

Why BBU?
Answer:
I was born and spent my childhood in Cluj, I studied in Cluj and although I spent three years as postdoc in France and research stays in the USA and I have established research collaborations in other countries, the atmosphere here in Cluj seems the best for me so I have chosen to ‘continue’ my student experience by becoming a teacher.

Future academic plans?
Answer:
Having become a tenured lecturer only this year, I have to focus on the ‘training’ related to my teaching duties. The grants I have won in recent competitions have allowed me to assemble a team of young researches and this team has to be further developed. I also want to develop more collaboration relationships with other researchers.

A short message to the BBU academic community?
Answer:
First I want to mention that I feel honoured to continue my activity as a member of this community. I consider that the research activity and especially the young researchers must be supported more (and I am saying this from the perspective of not being ‘young’ anymore). Also, internal bureaucratic procedures should be simplified to the maximum so that scientific productivity does not suffer.
