Summer Academy,, Empire and diversity “- Tübingen 2016

Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen (Germany), Babes Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca and Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest (Hungary) organize over a period of three years, 2016 to 2018, three Summer Academies on the theme “Danube Region and Europe. Diversity as a Challenge – Diversity as a Potential. Practice, Models, Comparisons”. The Summer Academy is the result of several years of cooperation between the three universities, especially in the field of history, cultural anthropology and German studies. Its fields of interest are 19th century, the interwar period and the Second World War, the Cold War and the enlargement of the European Union.
The main focus of the three Summer Academies is directed to particular experiences of the Danube region, while diversity is approached from a historical perspective understood not as a problem but as an advantage of regions. The Summer Academy is based on studies of renowned authors, presentations of current research projects and study in small working groups, covering the essential literature in the fields of interest.
The Summer Academy Tübingen 2016 “Empire and Diversity: the Habsburg Monarchy in 19th century” will cover the following topics: “Empire” as a paradigm in recent historiography, terms, theories and analytical tools for diversity research, introduction and special questions on the diversity of the state, law and public administration, majorities and minorities in urban culture, the impact of increasing mobility and migration, interpretation and identity in nationalist political movements.
The official opening is Friday, September 9, 2016, in Tübingen, in the Alte Aula of Eberhard Karls University.

Attending the event: Acad. Ioan-Aurel Pop, prof. PhD, rector of UBB and Rudolf Graf, prof. PhD, vice-rector of the German line of study, and Assoc. Prof. Pal Judith, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Christian Schuster, Assoc. Prof. Ioan Marius Bucur as keynote speaker or moderators as well as five PhD researchers and post-doctoral researchers with papers presentations.

Next year, the Summer Academy will be held at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest and in 2018 at Babes Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca.
