Babeș-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca (UBB) marks another significant international accolade with the selection of professor Radu Silaghi-Dumitrescu, PhD, to join top European researchers as a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts (EASA), one of the most prominent Pan-European academic entities.
“This accolade reflects the high quality of research conducted at UBB by our colleague Radu Silaghi-Dumitrescu, a professor at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, whose outstanding research in bioorganic and computational chemistry can be applied to the study of antineoplastic drugs and blood substitutes as well as oxidative and nitrosative stress. Professor Silaghi-Dumitrescu is also chair of the UBB Scientific Council (since 2012), director of the Centre for University Strategy (since 2020), and head of the Office for Open Science (since 2024), playing a consistent role in both advancing research and reinforcing the institutional policies of the University. His election as a member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts reinforces the contribution of the UBB academic community to national and European developments in science”, according to the UBB rector, professor psych. Founded in 1990 and based in Salzburg, the European Academy of Sciences and Arts (EASA) is home to around 2,000 members from around the world – renowned researchers, artists, and experts. Academia is structured into seven academic classes or divisions: Humanities, Medicine, Arts, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Law and Economics, Technical and Environmental Sciences, and World Religions. Within the field of science, the academy is very well represented, including over 30 Nobel Prize winners, selected through a rigorous three-stage process of nomination and peer review.

Babeș-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca (UBB) is the university with the most complex academic profile in the country (by its number of programmes and multicultural profile featuring three official academic languages: Romanian, Hungarian, and German), and with the oldest academic tradition in Romania (established 445 years ago – 1581), accounting for the largest academic community in the country (with a staff of more than 55,000 people, from 15 cities and 12 counties).
